What should my first step be to prepping my motorcycle?
Before we tell you anything else about what you should be doing for your motorcycle, you should always be referring to your service manual. This is key to everything maintenance related to your ride, and without it, you are left somewhat in the dark. The service manual tells you what regular maintenance tips you should be getting done, and when you choose us, we can continue to provide you with more suggestions and tips when it comes to that kind of maintenance routine. The more that you are prepared for prepping your motorcycle, the easier and more simplified everything else becomes.
What kind of checklist should I follow?
- Visually inspect your motorcycle: Before you go anywhere, or do anything further beyond look at your service manual, you should be giving your motorcycle a quick glance to see if you notice any kind of damage. This is especially important if your motorcycle is stored outside during these brutal Michigan winters, as that could mean it's more exposed to the elements or even animals.Â
- Electrical/battery check: Everyone knows that when it comes to a battery, they can drain out pretty quickly in the freezing cold. That's why you should be making sure that the battery in your motorcycle is functioning as it should, without any issues coming up. With this comes a check of all of the lights, which are key to driving your motorcycle around safely without running into any issues.
- Fluid levels: No motorcycle is going to be going anywhere without a fluid levels check. This includes checking out the fuel tank to make sure it doesn't need a new fuel filter, putting fresh gas in, changing out the engine oil, and seeing how the brake fluid has handled the winter. Should you notice any issues throughout these various systems, it might be time to schedule an appointment to get service performed.
- Drive system inspection: How are your chains and belts looking? Have the drive chains been cleaned and oiled? Is everything up to alignment? Should you have a belt in your motorcycle, you'll want to make sure that the drive belt tensions is what it should be in the service manual. In all circumstances, if something doesn't look right, feel free to schedule an appointment to bring it in.
- Consider your tires and brakes: The last key piece of maintenance that you need to be considering with your motorcycle prep this spring (besides cleaning it up), is to see how your tires and brakes are running. Flat tires are never a good thing, and if the pressure in the tires isn't where it should be, then you need to get that fixed as soon as possible. Now is also a good time to see how worn they are, and even get new ones if it's time. We can't forget about the brakes, either! Check the brake pads for wear, and ensure that the brake lines are functioning the way that they should be.
